Nami Sano, the creator of "Haven't You Heard? I'm Sakamoto" and "Migi to Dali" manga series passes away
The manga world has lost one of its brightest stars. Nami Sano, the manga creator behind the popular comedy series "Haven't You Heard? I'm Sakamoto" and the upcoming fantasy series "Migi to Dali", passed away on August 5th, 2023, after a short battle with cancer. She was only 36 years old.
Sano's death was announced by Kadokawa on August 16th, 2023, along with a heartfelt message from her family and editors. They expressed their gratitude for Sano's work and their condolences for her fans. They also shared Sano's last words, which were: "This ended up being a fun life. I am now going to a more free world. Goodbye."
Sano was born on June 22nd, 1987, in Osaka, Japan. She graduated from Kyoto Seika University with a degree in manga. She made her debut in 2011 with "Haven't You Heard? I'm Sakamoto", a hilarious manga about a high school student who is so cool and perfect that he can handle any situation with ease and style. The manga was serialized in Fellows! and Harta magazines until 2015, and collected in four volumes. It won the Comic Natalie Grand Prize in 2013 and was nominated for the Manga Taisho Award in 2014.
The manga was adapted into a 13-episode anime series in 2016 by Studio Deen, which was well-received by critics and fans alike. The anime was licensed by Sentai Filmworks and streamed by Crunchyroll. It was also dubbed in English by Funimation.
Sano's second manga series, "Migi to Dali", began serialization in Harta magazine in 2018. It is a fantasy story about a boy named Hitori who lives with his adoptive parents, who are actually angels. Hitori has to hide his true identity from his family and the world, while also dealing with his two guardian spirits, Migi and Dali, who have their own personalities and quirks. The manga ended in 2021 and was compiled in six volumes.
"Migi to Dali" is set to receive an anime adaptation in October 2023 by Geek Toys and CompTown. The anime will feature the voices of Shun Horie as Hitori, Ayumu Murase as Migi, and Rie Takahashi as Dali.
Sano's fans and fellow manga creators have expressed their sadness and shock over her passing on social media. Many have praised her talent, humor, and originality, and have thanked her for creating such memorable characters and stories.
