Review of the "Blue Beetle" movie by CNN
The movie “Blue Beetle” is based on a DC comic book character who is a young Latinx superhero with an alien armor. But is this movie worth your time and money, or should you wait for it to come to a streaming service or a TV channel? This is what I think about the movie, based on a review by CNN.
The movie tells the story of Jaime Reyes (played by Xolo Maridueña from “Cobra Kai”), who is the first college grad in his family and comes back home to face some economic problems. He meets Jenny Kord (Bruna Marque), the daughter of a mysterious businesswoman, Victoria Kord (Susan Sarandon), who is looking for an alien artifact called the Scarab. The Scarab attaches itself to Jaime and gives him a powerful and sleek armor that can talk to him and fly him around.
The movie has some good aspects, such as the casting, the action scenes, and the cultural representation of the Latinx community. Maridueña is likable and believable as Jaime, and he has good chemistry with his sister (Belissa Escobedo from “Hocus Pocus 2”) and his crazy uncle (George Lopez). The action scenes are lively and fun, and the suit design is visually appealing. The movie also includes some references to the comic book history of the character, which might please some fans.
However, the movie also has some big weaknesses, such as the villain, the plot, and the originality. Victoria Kord is a boring and clichéd villain who wants to use the Scarab for evil purposes. She has no depth or motivation, and Sarandon seems to be wasted in this role. The plot is predictable and formulaic, and it does not explore the potential of the Scarab or its origin. The movie also feels like a copy of other superhero movies, such as “Iron Man” or “Spider-Man”, without adding anything new or fresh.
In conclusion, “Blue Beetle” is a decent but forgettable movie that does not stand out among the crowded superhero genre. It might be enjoyable for some casual viewers or fans of the character, but it does not justify a theatrical release. It might have been better suited for a streaming service or a TV network, where it could have more time to develop its characters and story. “Blue Beetle” is not a bad movie, but it is not a great one either.
